Pin and Twist Updo

It's so hot out that this time I did the pin and twist and did my best to get the twists up on top of my head. But I also had to get on with my day so it's a bit messy.

Soft Curls

On Sat. we were at an SCA event so I decided to go with soft curls. I did pin curls on the long drive, then let them down once I got there.  I'm always tempted to comb my hair out and then I brush all the curls out. So this time I left it alone. I got some compliments too.

I don't curl my hair this way but it might work for some of you.

Backswept Braids

To do this look, you center part your hair.  Then you push your hair behind both ears and fish out a one inch piece just above each ear.  Then you braid each section, pull them back and fasten them together with a hair elastic.  Just be careful to keep the braids clear of the other hair and stray bits out of the braid. My hair was dry when I did this so I wet my fingers first to give me more traction on the slippery hair.

Bun and a Braid

Yesterday's challenge was to find a hairstyle that would be cool to wear, work for a nice restaurant, and keep my hair under control in a swimming pool.  So I did a high pony tail, twisted it until it was taught, then wrapped it into a bun and secured it with bobby pins.  The leftover hair I braided into a rat tail and secured with a hair elastic.
And it still looked good even after swimming.

Sideswept Pony Tail Hair Day 7

I wear my hair like this quite often.  When I sit in the truck and lean my head back, or when I lay on a pillow to read, I don't like having a big bulky bun to lean on. This gets my hair out of the way so I can be comfortable.

Braids With a Zig-Zag Part

Today I had to find a cool way to wear my hair in this heat wave.  So I did a zigzag part and braided my hair.

High Pony Tail Day Five

Considering the heatwave, today I decided to go with a classic.  A high ponytail. By some miracle my crimped feathers landed right on top so I have the first good photo ever of the feather extensions I got back in May compliments of my daughter.

Braided Crown Day 4

This style is not easy to do by yourself, and usually I have to attempt it 3 or 4 times before it either passes, or I get impatient and decide to do something else with my hair.  It helps to learn this on a friend and then once your muscles are trained you can braid behind your own head.

I started the braid just above my ear, went around the back, over the other ear, and then whatever is left gets braided and laid around my forehead and above the start of the braid.  When I get to the end of the braid I secure it with a hair elastic. The end gets tucked into the top of the main braid and then I pin the tail. This is a pretty style to enhance with tiny flowers like strawflowers for a special occasion.

Pigtails Day 3

In this hot weather I do my best to get my hair up and off my neck.  So today I went with pigtails.  That in itself looks pretty plain, so I spiced it up by wearing my newly woven hair scarf with it.

Fourth of July Uptwist with Feather Fascinator

Each Independence Day I make some sort of craft starting back when I was in Jr. High school in the 1970's when I made a copper enameled American flag pin.
So this year I made a hair ornament in red, white and blue to go with my new hair blog. The uptwist is a figure 8 that is pinned on both sides with bobby pins. I find it easier to put my hair up when it is damp, about 30 minutes after a shower. I'm definitely going to have to make some videos on how to do this one, because it is so second nature to me, I don't really think I could describe it in a way you can understand easily.

Pin and Twist

Last night I decided to do my hair in a pin and twist style I saw on the Internet, but I didn't want to sleep on a head full of bobby pins.  So I did it this morning.  This was my first try and I think I can do better in the future. I need to imagine the back of my hair parted as if I'm doing pigtails, and then lay the pin curls along that line.

Welcome to my Hairstyle Blog for DIY Hair

I thought I'd kick off my new hairstyles blog by wearing a different hairstyle each day for 30 days. I have long dark hair with a natural wave, so if your hair is like mine, you should be able to do most of these. I've never been much for hair salons. Even when I can afford it, they never do what I ask. Case in point I showed one stylist several photo examples of a gypsy layered cut and halfway through I said, "Excuse me but this doesn't look like it's going in the right direction."  And she says, "Well, I thought this style would look better on you." Slow burn.  At least if I do it myself I have no one but myself to blame.
